Steps for oil, gas and electric models explained clearly

There are a few occasions when you might need to turn off your AGA. Whether you are preparing for a service, planning a deep clean, or giving it a rest for summer, switching it off safely is straightforward once you know the correct steps.

A recent survey suggested almost half of AGA owners turn theirs off during warmer months. If you are in that group, here is a simple reminder of how to shut it down safely by fuel type.

Before starting, remember that AGA cookers are designed as heat-storage appliances. They cool gradually, so it is best to turn yours off the evening before. Leave the doors and lids open to help the heat escape, and never begin work until it is fully cool.

Turning off an oil AGA

To extinguish the burner, turn the control knob fully clockwise to the O position until it clicks, then release it. This stops the oil supply, and the flame will fade within a few minutes.

If the cooker will not be used for a while, also close the shut-off valves on the oil feed line, either at the tank or where the pipe enters the property, depending on your setup.

When restarting later, always allow the burner to cool completely. Never attempt to relight an oil AGA while it is still hot.

Turning off a gas AGA

For short periods:

Turn the thermostat clockwise to the Pilot position. This stops the main burner but keeps the pilot light on, helping the cooker stay partially warm.

For longer periods (servicing, cleaning or holidays):

Turn the thermostat to Pilot, press down gently and continue turning clockwise until you reach the Off position. You will hear a click as the gas supply cuts out. On LPG models, a small pop sound is normal as the flame goes out.

If you are unsure or smell gas, do not attempt to relight the cooker. Contact a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Turning off an electric AGA

Electric models, including reconditioned and converted systems, are the simplest to power down. Most can be switched off using the control panel, a dedicated wall switch or, on newer systems, a connected app or remote.

Unlike traditional fuel models, electric AGAs heat only when programmed, which makes them more energy efficient and easier to control. You can switch off individual zones, such as the hotplates or ovens, rather than shutting the whole unit down.

Preparing for servicing or cleaning

If you are turning off the cooker for maintenance, allow at least 12 to 24 hours for it to reach room temperature. Once cool, it is safe to clean, remove components or carry out minor repairs.

For deep refurbishment or re-enamelling, our engineers will always isolate the fuel or power supply as part of the process.

Final checks before you start work

After shutting down, double check that:

  • All burners or heating zones are off
  • Doors and lids are open for cooling
  • The surrounding area is clear and well ventilated

If you are unsure or have an unusual installation, seek advice before proceeding. Each AGA can vary slightly depending on age, model and conversion type.
